Before you start, gather your boxes, bubble pack, white packing paper, tape, marking pens, drop cloths (old sheets work well), mattress and furniture covers (available on site).
Begin packing seldom used articles ahead so won't have to pack everything at the last minute. Remember to keep needed medication, keys, phone numbers and other important documents in a separate overnight case or something accessible to keep with you.
- Plan the use of your space. Place items or boxes you will need access to near the front. Allow for path to rear of unit.
- Make an inventory of items as you pack. Label boxes with numbers on all four sides and room it belongs to. Keep lists of contents in safe place.
- Uniform box size makes stacking easier. Be sure to use strong boxes. Don't overpack, you want to get a lot in a box but in such a way nothing gets crushed. Come moving day you will be lifting lots of boxes 20 to 25 lbs. is the limit. Try to use a box for all your items - keeps them clean and less likely to be damaged.
- Stack lighter more fragile items on top. Make sure to mark boxes "FRAGILE", especially if you are having friends' help you move.
- Dishes and glassware should be wrapped in white packing paper. (Newspaper is very dirty to work with). Cushion each box with crumpled paper on top, bottom and between layers. Mark the boxes, "FRAGILE".
- Store mattress & box spring on long edges. "Prop" if necessary so they stand straight. Should be wrapped for protection.
- Sofa and loveseats can be stored on end to save floor space. Cover with old sheets or blankets. Do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of upholstered furniture. Loose cushions should be removed and stacked alone and covered with sheets or blankets.
- Pictures, mirrors, tabletop glass, should be wrapped with bubble paper or moving blankets and crated. Mark the boxes, "FRAGILE". Stand straight up - NEVER flat.
- Appliances should be thoroughly clean and dry. Freezer and refrigerator doors should be propped open - you can use a magazine or empty paper towel roll taped to door.
- Furniture with drawers are good places to store linens, blankets and towels.
- Furniture with legs like kitchen tables can be disassembled to save space. Good idea to put screws in small zip lock bag and tape to bottom of item.
- Brooms, mops, long handled garden tools (rakes, shovels, etc.) can be tied or taped in bundles. Clean, empty garbage cans make excellent storage holders for this type of item.
- If possible, store electronic equipment in original cartons. If not, pack each item separately. Coding wires with tape will make re-installation a lot easier. Back up important diskettes. Good idea to check owner's manual for any special moving instructions.
- Lamp bases should be wrapped in padding. Place lampshades in separate cartons and remove bulbs.
- Clothes should be hung loosely in wardrobe boxes.
- Records - pack vertically in small boxes to keep weight down. Albums should be separated with corrugated paper or cardboard to cushion.
- Books should be packed flat - once again do not overload boxes.
